One of my favorite bargain bin grabs is QB Jacob Eason of the Colts. I wanted to take a bit of a dive and find a dynasty league prospect with some big upside who can be had for a late 3rd or early 4th round draft pick this year. I would give a mid 3rd for him myself. If you’re in a Super Flex, he’s a good add no matter your situation, but especially if you have an aging and/or struggling QB on your roster.

Who is Jacob Eason?

Eason was a top recruit in his class coming out of high school. He ultimately decided on the Georgia Bulldogs but received offers from Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma, to name a few. He was hurt at Georgia week one in his sophomore campaign and was replaced by Jake Fromm. Following the 2017 season, Eason transferred from Georgia to his hometown college, the University of Washington.

According to Pro Football Reference, as an 18-year-old freshman at Georgia, Eason had 2,430 yards, 16 TDs, and a 120.2 QBR. After the transfer, he put up 3,132 yards, 23 TDs, and a 143 QBR for Washington. He also rocked a 64% completion percentage for Washington.

Lets Peek at the Tape

While watching the tape my overall feeling was he has Josh Allen’s arm and Peyton Manning’s chicken legs. He definitely lacks mobility.

  • He does throw with good velocity
  • Howitzer arm – Great ball placement as well
  • Generally good mechanics. Footwork needs correcting for NFL but nothing that can’t be corrected
  • He can make ANY throw in the book. Arm talent is incredible
  • Can change arm angles and not lose power. Can throw off-balance
  • Has a “killer” mentality. Plays with passion
  • Drops some absolute deep dimes
  • Reads need work. A little inconsistent. Sometimes checks down when he has a post for a TD if he would hold the ball for a second more. Cost them the Oregon game in 2019

*From what I have seen he may have fallen in the draft due to work ethic, attitude, and accountability.

Why I Would Make the Bet or Hold ‘Em

I watched an interview that was posted on the Colts official website on 10/24/20. He seemed very grateful to be a part of the Colts organization and was very satisfied with his own development. He said loved to pick Rivers and Brissett’s brains. After watching all their reps with them in the film room, he asked the two vets several questions like why they might prefer X over Y? Why do they audible to certain route concepts over others when they see a particular defensive look? He appears eager to learn and happy to do so. He said his confidence was growing. QB is a mentality, and he seems to be progressing. He said he often pulls his WRs after practices and gets extra reps.

The Indianapolis front office is also excellent. They are trustworthy. This team is built for success. They have a stud RB in Jonathan Taylor. Nyheim Hines is an awesome role player. Eason is in an outstanding situation. They have a real-life giant at TE in Mo- Alie Cox and two young and talented WRs in Parris Campbell and Michael Pittman. They also have a good offensive line that pushes around opponents frequently.

In front of Eason on the depth chart are two 2021 free agents, one of which is a 39-year-old noodle armed Rivers that threw for 4,169 yards and 24 TDs. The other is Brissett, who is more notable in the film room than anything else.

I like taking calculated risks in Dynasty, and this is one I’d make if you can. If I bet $1 and could win $1,000, you can have my dollar. Park the man in your Taxi Squad and see what happens. At his cost, I have no problem dropping him if it doesn’t pan out. He may even go for a mid 4th in some leagues, according to my recent Twitter poll. Go big or go home! Let me know if you made any deals and what they consisted of.

  1. Solid read, definitely going to pick him up in leagues. I never knew why he dropped in the draft but if it was work ethic then and he’s now picking the brains of vets. I can’t help but be intrigued when the opportunity comes.

    1. At his price it is a no brainer as far as upside. His arm was never in question. If he was on a bad team I think I’d pass, but Indy has shown they typically know what they are doing more times than not.
