With the NFL’s legal tampering period beginning, tight end Jonnu Smith made the first big splash.

The former Titan agreed to a 4-year, $50 million deal with $31.25 million guaranteed. The deal makes him the third-highest paid tight end in the NFL.

Smith was the TE9 in fantasy football last year. He caught 41 passes for 448 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games. Smith also had 35 catches for 439 yards and three touchdowns, on just 44 targets in 2019.

Patriots QB Cam Newton has a good history with tight ends, throwing to ex-Panther Greg Olson in three 1,000-yard season and two more 800-plus yard seasons.

In the two seasons since Rob Gronkowski’s departure from New England, Ryan Izzo’s 199 yards last season was the highest output from a Patriots tight end.
